Why the NCAR Trailhead Is One of the Best Engagement Session Locations in Boulder, Colorado


If you're looking for a location that perfectly captures Colorado's natural beauty without requiring an all-day hike, the NCAR Trailhead in Boulder is one of my favorite places for engagement sessions. Nestled at the base of the iconic Flatirons, this location offers sweeping mountain views, rolling hills, wildflowers in the spring and summer, and some of the most breathtaking sunsets along the Front Range.


One of the things that makes the NCAR Trailhead so special is how much variety you can experience in a relatively short walk. The trail winds through open meadows, rugged sandstone formations, and scenic overlooks with panoramic views of Boulder below. Whether you're envisioning adventurous photos overlooking the mountains or quiet moments walking hand in hand along the trails, this location provides a stunning backdrop in every direction. The trail itself is about one mile long with gentle elevation changes and spectacular views of the Flatirons throughout.

Golden hour is easily my favorite time to photograph here. As the sun begins to dip behind the mountains, the Flatirons glow with warm golden light, creating a romantic atmosphere that feels almost magical. The soft evening light is incredibly flattering and brings out the rich colors of the landscape, making every image feel timeless.


Because the NCAR Trailhead is one of Boulder's most popular hiking destinations, I always recommend scheduling your engagement session on a weekday or during sunrise or sunset when the trails are generally quieter. A little planning goes a long way in creating a relaxed experience where we can focus on capturing genuine moments together. The trailhead is open daily from early morning through late evening and offers easy access to several scenic trails.

When planning outfits, earth tones, soft neutrals, sage green, rust, cream, or dusty blue all photograph beautifully against the natural landscape. I also encourage couples to bring two outfits if possible one casual and one a bit dressier to add variety to their final gallery.

One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions at NCAR is how effortless the experience feels. Instead of stiff posing, we'll spend our time exploring the trails, laughing together, and enjoying the incredible scenery.
